Sea and Shore

In Chinook Jargon are many strong words. A few give us directions.

When we go to water or near water we use these few, strong words:

  keekwullie chuck = in (or under) water
klak kopa chuck = out from water
kopa hyas salt chuck = on ocean
siah kopa hyas salt chuck = far on ocean
mahtlinnie = off shore
mahtwillie = in (towards) shore
wake siah illahee = not far land
wake siah nauits = not far beach
kopa nauits = on beach
klak nauits pe kopa illahee tupsoo = off beach and on grass
